Cordyceps Lion by thomaswievegg Cordyceps Lion by thomaswievegg
Heeya! Concept art from the new Lion King movie! Naaah, I joke! I just wanted to explore what a lion infected with cordyceps fungus could look like. Really glad that they didn't have infected animals in the game though, that would've ruined it I think. EDIT: A lot of people have noted that there indeed were infected animals in the game, so to clarify what I meant: I'm glad there weren't any "fungal monster animals" :D Plus people are way more scary than animals, and I'm not even talking about infected people :la:

I love animals but if one of those came running after me... I think I'd break world records for the fastest runner...

really terrifying and a really cool design!

I get that this is a "last of us" concept... But this looks like some Resident Evil creepy stuff like Albert Wesker's hounds.

They were going to have them, but changed it for some reason before the game came out
From the last of us wiki
  • "As was revealed by Naughty Dog at PAX Prime Panel 2013 Event, there were originally supposed to be other Infected animals, including elephants, which are described as having fungal growths on their legs and mushrooms in their heads. However this design did not make it into the final game, therefore, it is unknown if in-universe animals are capable of becoming infected, as they often seem to be scared away by infected. It's shown during The University chapter that monkeys can be infected."

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how many zombie franchises even get to infected zoo animals because that would make for an interesting segment. Your artwork frightens me... it's too good... :iconmadlynotimpressedplz:

Yes please. Well done, excellent artwork and a really great concept.

If Cordyceps can evolve and effect warm-blooded humans, it's not unlikely they can infect lions, but I have a doubt any fungal monster lions would be around wherever Joel and Ellie are.

They. NEED. To include cordyceps animals in TLOU2. Even if their not as scary as the Clickers or the Hunters, it would be just SO cool to have to outrun/big game hunt things like this every other chapter or so. This is just badassery at it's finest!
inkdragon13 Featured By Owner Oct 19, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
That is horrifying! I'm sure glad I didn't have to deal with that in the game!
DetectiveRJ Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2014  Student Digital Artist
This is such a cool concept. I sorta buy it because if the cordyceps can evolve from infecting insects to humans in the TLOU universe (which is a huge huge jump by itself), it'd have very little difficulty in mutating to affect other mammals like canines and felines in the 20 years of the pandemic. c:

Creepy, but cool! Cordyceps fungus is the one that infects ants right?
alienfinderx Featured By Owner Edited Aug 10, 2014

I find your cordyceps gorilla more believable than your cordyceps lion. Both humans and gorillas distance related as they are both part of the ape family, while lions are felines. A disease jump to different species is very rare, but if two species are closely related to each other it is possilbe, look at bird disease it can easly jump for a pigeon to chicken, same with cow disease or pig disease.

Why not make Cordyceps Chimpanzee and Cordyceps Monkey? Humans are closely related to apes and monkeys and feel kind of kinship with them, and seeing something so closely related  to humans infected is alot scarier and sends a message that humanity cannot escape this infection so easily.
